In an innovative move, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabek announced that the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will join with a local developer to improve the quality of life for senior citizens living in group housing communities. Dunn & Associates Inc. will develop and operate The Palisades at Broadmoor Park, a 108-unit retirement community in southwest Colorado Springs. UCCS faculty will consult in the design and operation of the facility, which will include eight independent cottages with one- car garages, 40 independent apartments and 60 assisted living apartments. Plans call for amenities, such as a wellness clinic, multiple dining areas, exercise rooms, spa, barber and beauty shops, multimedia room, chapel, walking paths and a pub. Recognized as the home of one of the country's top gerontology education centers, the UCCS Gerontology Center is headed by Dr. Sara Qualls. This is an opportunity for UCCS faculty and students to help improve senior housing in Colorado Springs, in Colorado and throughout the nation, Shockley-Zalabek said. In return for its consultation, Dunn & Associates Inc. will provide the university with a share of the income from the community's operation. Additionally, Dunn will provide space for a university-operated innovation center for continued research on improving the quality of life for older Americans.
